In June 2023, an intrigue arose from the depths of space as Ken Chaffin and his daughter, Keli, decoded a simulated extraterrestrial message transmitted from Mars nearly a year prior. This endeavor was part of the SETI Institute’s ambitious project titled “A Sign in Space.” The transmission consisted of five distinct formations of amino acids, yet the interpretation of these formations remains a tantalizing mystery. The initiative not only showcased human curiosity about life beyond Earth but also exemplified the collaborative efforts that propel our understanding of potential extraterrestrial communication.
At the helm of this project was Daniela de Paulis, an artist in residence at the SETI Institute, whose experience as a licensed radio operator and collaboration with international scientists and artists facilitated the development of this alien signal simulation. The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter played a crucial role in this enterprise, as it sent out a signal modelled to simulate alien communication. This signal was subsequently captured by an array of observatories, including the Allen Telescope Array in California and the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station in Italy. Such a multi-faceted approach not only reaffirmed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration but also engaged citizen scientists in the decoding process.
The Chaffins’ task was not just to observe but to interact with the phenomena, employing cellular automata algorithms on what initially appeared as a chaotic “starmap” composed of white pixels. Their efforts culminated in the discovery of distinct clusters indicative of amino acids, which are the building blocks of life as we know it. Despite the success in revealing these molecular formations, the underlying message behind their selection remains part of the enigma. The intent was deliberately left ambiguous by de Paulis and her team, allowing for a broad spectrum of interpretations, mirroring the hypothetical nature of an actual alien transmission.
The project not only provided an opportunity for the Chaffins but also invited a global audience to speculate on the significance of the simulated message. This openness to public interpretation fosters a vibrant discourse ranging from theories about the origins of life in space to simplistic communications from alien civilizations. As a means of documenting this engagement, De Paulis plans to compile these interpretations into a forthcoming book, highlighting the diverse insights into what such a transmission might mean.
